Department Summary: Red Rocks Community College opened the doors of the Student Recreation Center (SRC) at the college’s Lakewood campus on June 26, 2017. The 35,000 square foot facility was designed with student input. It includes gymnasium space, weight/cardiovascular area, fitness studios, climbing and bouldering wall, an outdoor fitness deck, student meeting and gathering spaces, and a multipurpose field.

Student Recreation is dedicated to offering resources, services, and programs that meet the health and wellness needs of our diverse campus population. Through a comprehensive list of offerings from Group Fitness and Personal Training to fitness classes and adventurous hiking trips with our Adventure Program, we have something for every ability and fitness level.

Position Summary: The Adventure and Sport Program Coordinator manages the daily operations of the Red Rocks Adventure Program (RRAP). The RRAP includes outdoor adventure trips, indoor climbing wall, equipment rental, and mobile teambuilding programming. This position manages the daily operations of sport programs, which includes selecting and programming of drop-in events and activities, scheduling facilities for activities, and maintaining sports facilities and equipment.  The Adventure and Sport Program exists to meet the needs of the RRCC community, encourage participation in the programs, and foster a fun, inclusive and safe environment for program participants.

Description of Position

Program Development

  • Schedule, coordinate, staff, and lead Red Rocks Adventure Program (RRAP) trips. These trips include: mountain biking, outdoor climbing, backpacking. mountaineering, snowshoeing, and more.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the indoor climbing wall, including route setting, staffing, risk management, and event planning.
  • Develop team and individual sport/activity schedules, including day tournaments, special events, and open recreation opportunities.
  • Plan, develop, market, staff and assess all special events within RRAP and sport programs.
  • Establish, implement, train, enforce and ensure compliance with risk management, safety, and injury policies and procedures.
  • Work to dismantle barriers for participation amongst underrepresented populations in recreation.
  • Collaborate with other departments to create inclusive programs that promote and celebrate diversity.
  • Maintain a high level of accessibility to students and external partners while responding to questions, concerns, requests, and feedback.

Leadership and Supervision

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, develop, and evaluate RRAP and sport student staff.
  • Plan, schedule, and facilitate staff meetings and development opportunities.
  • Develop, assess, and revise learning outcomes for student staff and programs in consultation with the Director.
  • Coordinate the RRAP Trip Leader apprentice training program.
  • Assist with planning and leading SRC All-Staff events such as All Staff Training and End of Year Celebrations.
  • Develop and maintain program and employee manuals.

 Administrative

  • Develop and manage the day-to-day operation of the Red Rocks Adventure Program (RRAP) and sport programs.
  • Coordinate, reserve, purchase, and maintain public land permitting for trips.
  • Manage equipment and supply inventories, the equipment maintenance, budgeting, and purchasing for RRAP and sport programs. 
  • Maintain records, prepare, and analyze statistical reports, evaluations, participant surveys, and data.
  • Develop and distribute all marketing materials for RRAP and sport programs.
  • Manage all components of operating and maintaining the Adventure Program vehicles.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and track all SRC staff CPR/AED/First Aid certifications. Provide instruction duties.
  • Stay abreast of best practices and network with colleagues via professional associations.
  • Staff major events and programs, including campus events.
  • Develop policies, rules, and regulations for RRAP and sport activities.
  • Assist with development of policies, rules, and regulations for the Student Recreation Center.
  • Conducts bi-weekly payroll for RRAP and sport staff.

Qualifications

Required: Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent substitution (Full-time professional experience directly related to the position duties may substitute for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis). Possession of CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor Certification or ability to obtain within first 60 days of employment. Climbing instructor certification (AMGA, PCIA, etc.) or ability to obtain within first year or employment. Wilderness First Responder Certification.  Completion of certified avalanche course upon appointment or completion within first year of employment. Driving RRCC state vehicles is required.  A valid Colorado driver’s license is required (ability to obtain within 1 month of employment). One (1) year experience leading adventure trips. One (1) year experience in climbing wall operations and maintenance.

Preferred: Master’s Degree in outdoor recreation, sports management, recreation, higher education, physical education or related area. Experience in adventure/experiential education, with particular emphasis in collegiate recreation and experience facilitating climbing programs for diverse client groups. Leave No Trace Trainer certification (or higher). One (1) year of sport management experience. Experience in successfully marketing recreation programs. Knowledge of Innosoft Fusion or similar recreation software. Membership in or experience working in diverse communities and supporting the success of students and staff from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented in the College. 

Required knowledge, skills & abilities: Ability to work with a diverse student and staff population. Verbal and written communication skills including the ability to give and receive information accurately and present information to groups and in public settings. Budget management experience. Knowledge of business practices. Demonstrated experience in land agency permitting for adventure activities.
