Description
Animal Assisted Therapy Programs of Colorado (AATPC) is a nonprofit mental health center that operates an urban farm for the purpose of providing counseling and psychotherapy with the assistance of a wide variety of rescued therapy animals. We started our program in 2010 and moved to our first farm in 2011. Our urban farm is named Barking C.A.A.T. Ranch (Center for Animal Assisted Therapy); we moved from our 1-acre farm in Lakewood to our 3-acre Arvada farm in July 2018. We are home to many rescued and re-homed animals including horses, alpacas, goats, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and rats. Six additional Certified Therapy Dogs are owned by individual therapists. To our knowledge, there is no other counseling center like AATPC in the world. There are seven unique factors that set us apart: 1) We operate from an urban farm, allowing clients a unique, natural atmosphere to heal and grow; 2) We train and utilize interns and professional clinicians with a wide variety of specialties, allowing for clients with various mental health problems the opportunity to work with someone who is an expert in that area; 3) We serve all clients, regardless of their ability to pay; 4) We offer clients the opportunity to develop relationships with various animals at appropriate times in their treatment; 5) All of our animals have been rescued or re-homed and will live a life of freedom and dignity with us for the remainder of their natural lives; 6) We foster the importance of clients’ positive and reciprocal relationships with their own pets through its Filial Pet Therapy; and 7) We operate one of the only practice-based, clinical training and certificate programs in animal assisted psychotherapy in the world. Because of AATPC’s unique, inviting, and effective approach, we see clients of every demographic and economic group. Our largest client group has incomes of less than $25,000/year. Our specialty is serving people with complex mental health needs, and those in disenfranchised communities, while also being available to anyone who has counseling needs.
Join us to celebrate Animal Assisted Therapy's new location in Arvada and welcome them to the Arvada Chamber of Commerce!
